Email Marketing 101
Due to the growth of social media, ads and our focus on SEO, we can often forget to focus on email marketing campaigns. However, if you don’t run a successful email marketing campaign, your business is missing out! To help you get the best from all areas of your digital marketing strategy, we’ve put together some tips for the beginner’s guide to email marketing.
1. Make sure you get permission
You need to make sure that your email subscribers want to be part of your email list. You can’t “steal” peoples email addresses. Remember, that those who actually sign up or opt in with their email to your website or business, want to be involved. So, there is a higher chance you will receive a customer.
2. Be enticing
If you simply have a box on your website that says “enter your email for updates”, then the chances of people joining your list are slim. People need incentives. These are some of the most common questions people are thinking before they give you their email address.
• What do I get when I give you my email address?
• Are you going to spam me?
• How often will you email me?
• Will I receive discounts?
People are more likely to sign up to give you their email if they are going to receive a discount, freebie, or know how often you are going to email them. The most common things that people sign up for are:
• Email series’ (i.e. 5 ways to lose weight for summer)
• Free downloads
• eBooks
• Update lists (product updates, new issue notifications, new releases)
Decide which approach fits into your business.
3. Stay interesting
In order to have a successful email marketing strategy, you need to be consistent with your approach. If you are only emailing every couple of months, then there is a high chance that your customers will forget about it and avoid opening the email. On the other hand, if you are emailing too often, then your customers will feel like you are spamming them and perhaps unsubscribe. It’s all about finding the perfect balance. Remember a customer from an email marketing campaign, can be both loyal and recurring, if you give them the chance. Offer exclusive discounts, updates and new releases to keep your subscriber feeling unique.
4. Test and monitor
If you don’t feel like you are getting anything from your email marketing campaign, then make changes. There are so many different approaches to try and you can monitor your analytics to see how many people open your emails, and then click on links within an email. If things aren’t working as you wish, then you can change the layout, the style of writing, the tone of voice, the form of email, time of day, the day of the month and much more. There is so much data that can help you carve the perfect email marketing campaign, so use all that information to your advantage.
5. Make it personal
No one wants to feel like another number on a list, and you need to make your emails a little personal. This is easily achieved by introducing the email with the subscriber’s name, and sending out a special email on their birthday or anniversary of when they first bought your product, or even signed up to your newsletter, website etc. This personal touch makes people feel more special.
